Marking the day of remembrance
A yahrzeit is the anniversary of a loved one's death, kept each year according to the Hebrew calendar. On it we kindle a memorial light — a נר נשמה (ner neshamah), the soul candle that burns through the day — say the Mourner's Kaddish, and read Tehillim (Psalms) in the person's memory. May their memory be a blessing.
The psalms of the name, and Psalm 119
By custom we read the psalm-passages whose opening letters spell the name of the one we remember, together with Psalm 119 — the great alphabetical psalm, arranged letter by letter, from which those verses are drawn. In this way the very letters of a name become words of Torah said in their honor.
What to do
Light the ner neshamah, say Kaddish where a minyan (prayer quorum) is present, and read the verses that spell the name along with Psalm 119. Let the reading be unhurried; it is a visit paid in words.
