Blessings · Waking and the table

In what order are the blessings said at the table?

Bread comes before everything else at the table: you say the blessing over bread first, and it opens the meal. When you are choosing among fruits, the seven species associated with the Land of Israel take priority over the rest.

Bread leads the table

When several foods are set before you, the words over bread come first. You say המוציא (ha-motzi, the blessing over bread), and with that the meal is opened. This is not a matter of taste or preference; it is the settled order of the table, and there is a quiet dignity in letting bread go before all the rest, as the food that sustains a person more than any other.

Among fruits, the seven species come first

Where there is no bread, and you have several fruits before you, the tradition gives priority to שבעת המינים (shivat ha-minim, the seven species by which the Land of Israel is praised). A fruit of the Land is blessed and eaten before the other fruits. It is a small act of orientation: even at an ordinary meal, the table remembers the Land.

Where this is taught

The order is drawn from the Mishnah in Berachot 6:5, and it is set out for practice in the Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 211. These are the classical addresses for the precedence of blessings. For the finer cases at your own table, this is orientation and not a ruling; bring the question to your rabbi or your community.

What to do

If there is bread, begin with המוציא over the bread before anything else. If there is no bread and you are choosing among fruits, take one of the seven species of the Land first, and then the other fruits follow. Let the order carry you gently, one blessing at a time.

What to doSay ha-motzi over bread first; if there is no bread, bless a fruit of the seven species before other fruits.

When you are unsure which words the food before you is asking for, let Barkai (the blessings of the day; the sky and place tell you the moment) name the blessing, so each thing you eat meets its right words.
