Barkai Privacy Policy
Barkai is the Jewish gratitude app from the house of My Jewish Day. It is written in plain language because your spiritual and family information deserves special care. Most of your data lives only on your phone.
1What lives only on your phone
Your name, your meá brachot counter, and your chain are stored locally on your device. We do not upload them to any server.
2Approximate location
To compute the zmanim (halachic hours) of your place and for the sky alerts (weather), we use an approximate location —an area of roughly 11 km, never your exact position—. This location is never shared with third parties and never sold.
3Background location and nearby places
If you turn on sky alerts or place-based blessings, Barkai may use your location in the background ("Always" permission) to detect — on your own phone — that you have arrived at a place such as the sea, a river, or a mountain. That detection happens on the device: your precise location never leaves your phone.
The only thing that leaves the device is an approximate area of about 11 kilometers (your coordinates, rounded), which is sent to our server to prepare sky alerts and to these providers for specific features: Apple Weather (weather, through our server), Open-Meteo (weather and sea conditions), and OpenStreetMap/Overpass (to know which coasts, rivers, or mountains exist around that area). None of them receives your exact location.
We do not sell your data, we do not share it for advertising, and we use no advertising networks or behavioral analytics. The one diagnostic exception — anonymous crash reporting — is described in section 8. You can delete all your data from within the app (Settings → "Delete my data") and turn off location access at any time in your system settings; the app keeps working with everything that does not depend on place.
4Photo recognition happens on your phone
If you choose to take a photo to find out whether there's a berachah, the recognition happens inside your own device using the system's technology (Apple Vision). The image never leaves your phone and is never uploaded to any server.
5Sky alerts
If you turn on the sky alerts (storm, rainbow conditions, the moon), in order to deliver them we store on our server an anonymous device token, your name (to greet you), and your city cluster (approximate location). You can unsubscribe at any time and that data is deleted.
6Subscriptions
The Apple App Store and Google Play process billing for Premium. We do not see or store your payment card details.
7How to delete your data
Inside the app, under Settings → Delete my data, you clear all local information on your phone and deregister your device from our server (removing the token, your name, and the city cluster used for sky alerts).
8No advertising, no data sale — and crash diagnostics
Barkai contains no advertising, uses no advertising tracking networks, and does not sell or share your data for commercial purposes. There is one diagnostic exception, and we name it plainly: when the app closes unexpectedly or hits a serious error, it sends an automatic crash report to Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, so we can find out it broke on someone's phone and fix it — before this, we never even knew. A report carries the technical trace of the error (file, line, call stack), your device model, its operating-system version, the app version, and the device's state at the moment of the crash (available memory, whether the app was in the foreground), together with a random installation identifier that Firebase generates to group crashes from the same install. It never carries your name, your location, or anything about your practice — no blessing you said, no counter — and no purchase receipt, token, or credential. In development this collection is off; it only runs in the versions published to the stores. Google processes this data under its privacy policy.
9Minimum age
Barkai is intended for users 13 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
